Frequently Asked Questions
What is PRP?
PRP stands for platelet rich plasma. Blood, in addition to red and white blood cells contains platelets, rich in growth factors and are the most potent healers of the body. Growth factors promote healing by restoring strength of the tissue.
Once blood is collected via a tube, it is processed at high speeds, resulting in a separation of the red blood cells from the plasma. This plasma has higher concentrations of platelets with growth and healing factors, which are then used to promote healing, increase local blood flow, and stimulate hair follicles to grow healthier.
How is PRP used to treat hair loss near Carnegie?
At our conveniently located clinic near Carnegie, the procedure involves:
Drawing a small blood sample (typically 10–20 mL) and processing it by centrifugation to isolate the platelet-rich plasma.
Injecting the PRP into thinning or balding areas of your scalp using fine needles or microneedling techniques. This stimulates dormant follicles, increases local blood flow, and encourages collagen and extracellular matrix production.
Our treatments are delivered in a sterile clinical setting by trained specialists near Carnegie.
What do I have to do before and after the treatment?
If you can, it is best if you can avoid anti-inflammatory medications for three days prior and three days after the procedure. This includes prescription anti-inflammatory medications as well as over the counter paracetamol (cardiac clients should continue taking aspirin). Clients on blood thinners (Coumadin/warfarin/Plavix/Pradaxa) are not candidates for PRP injections. Right after the PRP procedure, the client is fine to continue normal everyday life.
What are the potential risks of PRP treatments?
At our clinic near Carnegie, PRP therapy is minimally invasive and generally very safe. Possible side effects may include:
Minor bruising at injection or blood draw sites.
Temporary increased hair shedding (occasionally part of the early growth cycle).
Mild headache or scalp discomfort.
These side effects typically resolve on their own shortly after treatment.
Are results guaranteed?
From experience, clients with Androgenetic Alopecia achieve visible results usually within the first 3-4 months. The process of follicular miniaturisation occurs over the course of many years; thus rejuvenation of the follicles is not a quick process. Furthermore, existing catagen and telogen hairs (hair in the rest phase) will need to shed first before new healthier anagen hairs (hair in growth phase) grow.
How quickly you attain results will depend on a few factors such as age, severity, genetic predisposition to hair loss, treatment dosage, scalp condition and other external factors. Generally, the earlier treatment is begun, the faster and more effective the results are. New hair growth is seen in almost all cases of pattern hair loss, but the extent of satisfaction will also depend on the individual. There are some individuals who respond well – and then there are those who don’t respond as well and may need additional treatment. We recommend that you come in for a consultation at our clinics to assess your scalp and hair condition and discuss your chances of hair regrowth.
Is PRP therapy painful and is there any downtime?
Discomfort is minimal. Most clients experience little to no pain at the crown area, with slight sensitivity possible towards the front hairline. Any discomfort experienced is typically mild and brief. There’s no downtime—you can leave our clinic near Carnegie and return to your regular activities immediately.
